The Company’s core purpose is to enhance society by creating, collecting and distributing high-quality news, information and entertainment.

Academic Internships, Summer 2009.

The New York Times invites ambitious, motivated graduate or undergraduate students in journalism to apply for summer-long unpaid internships in our two new community journalism Web sites: The Local, serving Fort Greene-Clinton Hill, Brooklyn, and Maplewood, South Orange and Millburn, N.J.

Working alongside our reporters and editor, students can expect to propose and contribute posts, attend local government meetings, take photos and audio and video feeds, help with the production of the Web site, and collect information from local citizen journalists.

To be eligible, students must be enrolled for the summer semester and provide letters from their colleges or universities stating that they are receiving academic credit for the internship. They must also provide the contact information for the professor or academic professional responsible for monitoring internships.

Preferred candidates will have a demonstrated interest in online journalism, including previous internships on websites or daily papers. Writing and web production skills, entrepreneurial instincts, people skills, and, in the case of the Essex County blog, access to a car, would be pluses. Candidates need not be majoring in journalism or communications, provided they have this experience and the published or online clips, which should show range: breaking news, features and news analysis.

To apply, students must submit a letter of interest along with a resume, two letters of recommendation from their professors, six newspaper and/or online clips, and a written statement outlining what they hope to learn from the internship.

Location: Maplewood, Millburn and South Orange, NJ or Brooklyn, NY.

Hours: Up to 20 hours a week; days flexible.

Salary: Unpaid; must receive academic credit.

Required for application: Application form, resume, two letters of recommendation, six published or posted clips, statement of goals. (A letter from the institution stating you are receiving academic credit will be required once interns are chosen.)

Deadline for submission Friday, April 24 Internship start date: Week of June 1, 2009
