Disaster News Network in Columbia, Md., is seeking paid interns. This is a terrific opportunity for a college senior or graduate student with strong telephone interview skills. Disaster News Network is a respected 24/7 online news service has an immediate opening for an engaging writer with a passion for reporting and a photojournalist’s eye. The turnarounds are demanding but not deadly. The real rewards, however, are in the subject matter. This is news about people in trouble and those who respond.
Disaster News Network is into its second decade of online journalism.You’ll cover the country from the Baltimore/Washington metro area and conduct interviews by phone and in the field. When the story is a big one, you may have the opportunity for out of town travel. Real talent and desire are more important here than experience. You can expect hands-on management from an experienced news team while you stretch your skills to new levels.
To be considered for this opening, you’ll need to be a senior or graduate student in journalism or communications, and have some previous professional experience on a daily newspaper or news service (solid college daily experience acceptable). Radio and/TV news experience is a big plus. Curiosity, persistence, and excellent interpersonal skills are required. Pay is a stipend (up to $1,000 per month) plus expenses.
