Hagerstown Herald-Mail seeks police/courts reporter

The Herald-MailCompany in Hagerstown, Md., has an immediate, full-time opening for a Police/Courts Reporter. This is an hourly position, typically working an 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. shift, Monday through Friday, with other hours and days as necessary. Duties include covering all aspects of public safety in Washington County, Md., with a focus on breaking news, police and fire coverage, court coverage – including trials and other matters as assigned – and general assignments. To be successful, this individual must be an expert in court procedures, cultivate contacts in police departments, the courthouse, the State’s Attorney’s office, the Public Defender’s office, the county magistrate office, and the federal court system, and must know all judges in Circuit and District Court. Additionally, the reporter must have a sense of urgency re: obtaining breaking news for the Web, and must deal with all customers in a courteous manner.
